Canada Ski Jumping Ski Jumping Canada (SJC) is the national sports governing body for ski jumping in Canada. Its various functions include:
- Promoting ski jumping in Canada. - Governing the conduct of ski jumping competitions in Canada. - Selecting and training members to the ski jumping national teams. - Developing programs to train athletes, coaches, judges, and officials. - Representing ski jumping in the Canadian Ski and Snowboarding Association. - Representing ski jumping in the Canadian Olympic Committee. - Representing ski jumping in Canada to FIS. - Selecting athletes to represent Canada Internationally.
Currently, Calgarys "Canada Olympic Park" is home to the Ski Jumping National Training Centre. SJC works directly with the Calgary Olympic Development Association, CODA, to take advantage of the 1988 Olympic Legacy and to ensure the best possible high performance program for ski jumpers in Canada.
Most active ski jumpers at present are members of Calgarys Altius Nordic Ski Club. There are also developing clubs in Ontario where ski jumpers are being trained.
Development of high performance athletes in Calgary begins with recruitment and training of young jumpers (7 to 12 years of age) in "Learn to Jump" programs at Canada Olympic Park. Talented athletes are identified and encouraged to continue training in the Ski Hopper program from which they can advance through the ranks to High Performance Training, National Development and ultimately, National Team levels.
In 2003, SJC can boast more than 40 young jumpers in the Ski Hopper program, 12 athletes, 10 to 14 years of age, in the High Performance Program, and 7 athletes in various levels of the Canadian National Team.
At present, members of our National Team and National Development Team are competing occasionally in Continental Cups and Junior World Ski Championships with increasingly positive results. We are looking toward the next Olympics in 2006 and are hoping to send a full team of Ski Jumpers to proudly represent Canada.
